Science Breakthrough of the Year 2024

The discovery of Altermagnetism – by researchers of SPIN+X  – has been selected by Science as a runner-up break-through of the year 2024.

Altermagnetism is a new type of emergent magnetism, predicted five years ago and recently verified experimentally by researchers of SPIN+X.

The figure shows a model of an altermagnetic crystal: Not only the directions of spin polarization (in magenta and cyan) alternate on neighboring magnetic atoms, but also the atomic shapes themselves – as shown by tilting the dumbbell-shaped electron densities in two different directions.
