Lecture series Making of Pfalz; lecture by Prof. Dr. Matthias Schirren: "Democracy as a builder" - Architecture of a political idea

Democratic state structures have repeatedly emerged as builders: the Greek polis of antiquity as well as the Italian city-state of the early modern period and various constitutional states of the modern era. How does their architecture differ from that of non-democratically legitimized rulers? Or does "archḗ" (ἀρχή), the Greek word for beginning as well as for origin, principle and rule (!), the stem of which forms the first part of the compound "architecture", even designate an authoritarian element that removes building from all negotiation processes from the outset?

The lecture pursues these questions using various historical examples in order to give an outlook on the contemporary more than indicated building turnaround.

[Admission €5 for non-members of the Historischer Verein der Pfalz e.V. Students registered for the lecture are admitted free of charge].
