Climate crisis between conflict and cooperation: the second Landau Climate Talks highlight backgrounds and opportunities

The Landau Climate Talks dare to look beyond the city limits: How are current conflicts linked to the climate crisis? And how can the common challenges of climate change be overcome peacefully? Mayor Lukas Hartmann and the Climate Office cordially invite all interested parties to the second event in the new series of talks on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in the Haus am Westbahnhof. The topics of the evening are the potential for cooperation and security risks in times of global environmental change. Our associates Dr. Rebecca Froese and Prof. Dr. Janpeter Schilling will be present.

"Climate change as a cause of conflicts and wars is often underestimated and forgotten when it comes to conflict prevention," says Lukas Hartmann. "We want to become aware of the problem and find a good way of dealing with it. Fortunately, peace research is helping us to solve this challenge."

Dr. Rebecca Froese and Prof. Dr. Janpeter Schilling will shed light on how climate and environmental changes affect cooperation and peaceful coexistence. Both are Associate Fellows of the Peace Academy Rhineland-Palatinate and have conducted research there on conflicts and environmental peacebuilding, including as Scientific Director and Managing Director of the research institution. He is now Professor of Risk, Crisis and Conflict Management at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. Rebecca Froese works as a research assistant at the Center for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research at the University of Münster.

Together with Lukas Hartmann, they will draw a differentiated picture of the climate crisis as a conflict intensifier, but also as an opportunity for cooperation.
