Workshop on peace education in conflicts over democracy
As part of the study day "Embattled Democracy - Education and Social Work in the Context of Right-Wing Extremism" at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Freiburg, Annalena Groppe (Research Associate at the Peace Academy Rhineland-Palatinate) and Melanie Hussak (Associate at the Peace Academy) offered a workshop on the role of peace research and education in conflictual democratic negotiation processes.
With 19 participants from practice and academia, the conference topic was explored in depth from a peace studies perspective. Based on concrete conflict episodes - both from research and from the experiences of the participants - different manifestations of violence in conflicts about democracy were analyzed and discussed. The workshop opened up spaces for reflection for pedagogical and professional action in dealing with authoritarian-populist challenges and invited participants to jointly address the question of how peace education can contribute to a practice that strengthens democracy.
