Review of Thomas Wagner's lecture on the limits of democratic discourse
There was plenty of discussion and laughter: Thomas Wagner's lecture on "Limits of democratic discourse? Talking and arguing with the right" on June 1 at Neustadt Monastery was well attended.
The lecture was very inspiring and highly topical in view of the events surrounding the 2022 Democracy Festival at Hambach Castle the weekend before. It is not possible to summarize the complex contribution and the discussions it stimulated. In the current climate of hostility, discourse constrictions and disputes about the right or wrong understanding of democracy, there are no clear and simple answers. However, we take away that exchange and discourse are possible even across deep ideological divides and - despite all the difficulties - are necessary for understanding and peaceful coexistence.
