Annalena Groppe has been a research assistant at the Peace Academy since October 2019 and works on conflicts over democracy around the Hambach Castle. She develops peace education responses to structurally and verbally violent narratives by right-wing actors on the significance of the Hambach Festival.

She studied Social and Religious Studies at the University of Bochum and completed the Master Program "Peace, Development, Security and International Conflict Transformation" at the University of Innsbruck. In her work she draws on practical pedagogical experience as an educational consultant at Friedenskreis Halle e.V. There she networked organizations, trained educators and organized the conference "Verbindendes stärken! (Empowering connection!)" of the Network Peace Education in Central Germany.

Annalena Groppe‘s PhD project explores the topic of peace education in polarizing conflicts over democracy using the case study of the 'Neues Hambacher Fest', a right-wing populist event on the Hambach castle near Neustadt a.d.W. Together with regional and educational actors, she follows the framework of participatory action research to investigate how peace education can convey the necessary competencies in these conflicts.
