Start of the "CIDR Talk" series with Rupesh Shrestha
Today our first CIDR Talk took place at the Center of Interdisciplinary Disaster Research (CIDR ). Around 40 participants attended the session "Flood Resilient Housing in Nepal", presented by Rupesh Shrestha and followed by an inspiring discussion.
The presentation showed the dramatic global context: since 1998, over 2.3 billion people worldwide have been affected by flooding. Climate-related hazards now account for around 90% of recorded disasters, and floods are increasing in frequency and intensity. Vulnerable population groups in low- and middle-income countries, where housing is often informal and highly exposed, are particularly affected.
The focus was on the Terai region in Nepal, where the project has developed locally adapted solutions for flood-resilient construction - including lime-stabilized soil, local natural materials, raised plinths, improved connections and earthquake-proof construction principles. Key learnings emphasized the importance of materials research, technology transfer, training of professionals and supportive policy frameworks for wider implementation.
Many thanks to our speakers and everyone who made this successful start of the CIDR Talk Series possible!
