The JUMP2 program – On the Way to a Professorship – will start in the winter semester 2025/26.
The program is aimed at junior research group leaders, junior professors, and tenure-track professors (R3 researchers) with the goal of providing them with the best possible support during the critical phase of their academic careers and assisting them in the next stage of their professional development.
At RPTU, JUMP2 is coordinated by the Career Development and Appointments Department and carried out in cooperation with 14 other universities from all over Germany. R3 researchers from all participating universities can participate in JUMP2 free of charge.
JUMP2 comprises three key elements::
JUMP2 Future Leader Mentoring
JUMP2 Future Leader Mentoring brings together R3 researchers with established professors from one of our 15 partner universities who are strong in research. The aim of JUMP2 Future Leader Mentoring is to support R3 researchers in further developing their scientific profile, to give them specific impetus for their academic career, and to expand their professional network in the long term.
Female R3 researchers have the option of choosing between JUMP2 Future Leader Mentoring and the established mentoring programs for women at their respective universities, and can also combine the mentoring components.
JUMP2 Peer Counselling
JUMP2 offers R3 researchers peer counselling, enabling them to network and exchange ideas with R3 researchers from other universities who are at the same stage of their careers and face similar challenges, and to support each other.
Peer counseling is offered to R3 researchers who
a) have started their position within the last six months, or
b) are due for their (interim) evaluation within the next year.
Regular online meetings facilitate intensive peer exchange.
JUMP2 workshops
The JUMP2 program offers a series of workshops tailored specifically to the needs of R3 researchers. The workshops are open to participants from all participating universities and cover three key topics:
- Paths to tenure-track positions
Sample topics: Career planning for professorships, applying for and being appointed to a (tenure-track) professorship, appointment negotiations - Paths through everyday university life
Example topics: Acquiring third-party funding, university law, committee work and holding meetings - Paths to a competent leadership role
Example topics: Leadership and supervision of doctoral candidates, chair management, leading research groups
