Ulrike von Pilar

About the authors

Dr . Ulrike von Pilar, who holds a doctorate in mathematics, taught as a lecturer in Tübingen, Brussels and Hong Kong before working for the UNHCR in Hong Kong in 1988 as a school and work coordinator in the camps for Vietnamese boat refugees. In 1991, she began her humanitarian work with Médecins Sans Frontières in Brussels. She was the founding president and long-time managing director of Médecins Sans Frontières in Germany and, as part of this work, visited Tibet/China, Rwanda, Darfur/Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and later the Central African Republic, Kenya, South Africa, Chad and Jordan. In 1999, Doctors Without Borders was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its groundbreaking humanitarian work. From 2006 to 2008, Ulrike von Pilar was the country coordinator of an HIV/Aids project in Malawi and from 2009 to 2012, she was a member of the MSF board in the UK and East Africa. From 2012 to 2017, she led the MSF advocacy team. She has been a member of the Maecenata Foundation Board since 2018. Ulrike von Pilar was a lecturer in the NOHA Master's program in Humanitarian Aid at the University of Bochum and has written a number of articles and a book on humanitarian issues.
