The 68th annual congress ofVDFG/FAFA (Vereinigung Deutsch-Französischer Gesellschaften für Europa e.V.) took place from October 4-6, 2024. The motto of the congress was "Civil society. Committed. Borderless" and brought together almost 200 participants from Germany and France in Landau in der Pfalz. The closing event on October 6 was co-organized by the Peace Academy Rhineland-Palatinate.

Dr. Gregor Walter-Drop, Managing Director of the FA, acted as moderator of a panel discussion entitled "Die Zukunft ist Versöhnung / L'avenir de la réconciliation". The following took part in the discussion: Frédéric Petit, Member of the Assemblée Nationale, Prof. Dr. Stefan Garsztecki from Chemnitz University of Technology and Dr. Steffen Hageman from RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau. They discussed not only Franco-German relations, but also relations between Germany and Poland and the possibilities for reconciliation in the Middle East conflict. The participants identified a number of particularly interesting cross-cutting aspects of the topic of reconciliation: (1) the question of the relationship between civil society and political (state-driven) reconciliation initiatives, (2) the question of the necessity of linking remembrance and reconciliation and (3) the role of symmetry between the (former) conflict parties as a prerequisite for reconciliation processes.
