Since 2001, a jury from the Federal Center for Political Education has been awarding the Active Prize to groups that are committed to democracy and tolerance. This year, 57 projects from 455 applications received prize money, including the Freundeskreis Hambacher Fest 1832, which is particularly active in Neustadt. We warmly congratulate them on this award, which recognizes volunteer work - even in its critical form - as an enrichment of local democracy and the culture of remembrance.

In the Friends of Hambach Festival 1832, a small group of people from different backgrounds work on a critical examination of authoritarian-populist attempts to appropriate the history of democracy at Hambach Castle. In the form of research and public relations work on the blog, events, discussions with decision-makers and political statements, the group aims to be a critical corrective on the one hand and to show that democracy can (and must) be alive in collective discussion and practical organization on the other.

We are delighted about the appreciation of this work by the Federal Agency and are grateful for the good and inspiring cooperation with the Circle of Friends over the past five years. We are excited to see how the work will develop and look forward to continuing to work together for living democracy (history) and conflict transformation at Hambach Castle.

Once again: Congratulations on the award!
