Last weekend, the Peace Academy RLP organized a workshop on conflicts around democracy in the context of the so-called 'new Hambach Festival', an event with right-wing populist speakers that has been taking place at Hambach Castle for three years. Actors from civil society, local politics and the castle administration came together to gather their different perspectives on the conflicts and develop possible next steps.

After a tour of the castle, the managing director of the Peace Academy, Dr. Charlotte Dany, gave an input presentation on how speakers at the 'new Hambach Festival' questioned democratic pillars such as minority rights and freedom of opinion. How can we deal with this? This question shaped the subsequent workshop, conducted by Annalena Groppe, an employee of the Peace Academy. Maps of conflict situations were drawn up, different perspectives were shared in the group and possible attitudes were tested - also in the truest sense of the word with the help of theater methods. At the end, wishes and offers were compiled, laying the foundation for further exchange.

We would like to thank the participants for their commitment and for sharing their expertise, as well as for the funding from the Rhineland-Palatinate Supervisory and Service Directorate as an innovative training measure for democracy, openness to the world and tolerance.
