"Europe at the crossroads": University and Landau secondary schools invite students to discuss and exchange ideas at three events to mark Europe Week
Europe is in crisis. This statement is almost a commonplace and runs like a red thread through the history of the EU's development. However, with Brexit and the heated exit debates in other European countries such as France and the Netherlands, the discussion about Europe's crisis has taken on a new urgency. The fact that Europe is still facing adversity with regard to the euro, such as Greece, has almost been forgotten.
"Europe is at a crossroads. Achievements that were thought to be secure, such as freedom of movement and residence, are in question," emphasizes Dr. Timo S. Werner, Managing Director of the Frank Loeb Institute at the University of Landau. It is often assumed that young people in particular have lost interest in the European idea or have become so accustomed to its achievements that they have lost sight of the need to stand up for Europe, adds Dr. Sascha Werthes, Managing Director of the Peace Academy Rhineland-Palatinate.
Together with the three Landau grammar schools Eduard-Spranger-Gymnasium (ESG), Max-Slevogt-Gymnasium (MSG) and Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium (OHG), the two political scientists Werner and Werthes are organizing a series of events under the heading "Europe at the crossroads" as part of Europe Week. On three evenings, an event will be held at each of the grammar schools to encourage people to engage with Europe.
On May 9, the former President of the European Parliament, Prof. Dr. Klaus Hänsch, will speak at the MSG from 7.30 p.m. on the situation in Europe and its opportunities for development. On May 10, the scientist Wolf J. Schünemann and the former head of the European Department of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Representation in Berlin, Dr. Otto-Schmuck, will discuss the question of whether Europe needs a common army (beginning at 7 p.m., ESG). On May 11, students will be invited to develop their own ideas for the future of Europe in an Open Situation Room under the expert guidance of Dr. Tobias Lindner, Member of the Bundestag. This event will take place at the OHG and will begin at 3 pm.
The series of events is sponsored by the European Department of the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate.
The first two events are open to the public and registration is not required. For the event on May 11, prior registration is required at friedensakademie-rlp[at]uni-landau.de.
