Online lecture "Right-wing populism in Europe - causes and wrong answers" (Dirk Jörke)

Discussion right-wing populism

Dirk Jörke emphasized that populism is an expression of a fundamental democratic deficit that manifests itself in a division of society. In response to right-wing populism, moralizing socio-political debates about democracy is counterproductive, as it exacerbates social polarization. Instead, populism should be seen as an appeal to the elites to take the promises of democracy more seriously again. The theses were discussed with historian Claudia Gatzka, co-editor of the volume "Schleichend an die Macht. Wie die Neue Rechte Geschichte instrumentalisiert, um Deutungshoheit über unsere Zukunft zu erlangen", as well as with the political scientist Philipp Erbentraut, Vormärz and party expert. He argued that disputes as such, including party disputes, must once again be given a positive connotation in democracy, as they are the core element of democracy. The event was recorded and can be viewed on our YouTube channel. The event was organized by the Peace Academy RLP and the "Democracy Conflicts" project group at TU Darmstadt, which is funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation. Further financial support for the lecture came from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Center for Political Education.

The event took place as part of the Hambach Democracy Days. A series of workshops, lectures and cultural events will be offered in June and July 2021. The aim of the Democracy Days is to offer the public the opportunity to actively engage with democracy. The series of events is organized by the initiative group #2021HAMBACH1832, a no-budget grassroots initiative. Various institutions of the University of Koblenz-Landau are also involved with different events. More
