German
as a foreign language
The German language (Deutsch) belongs to the West Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family and is spoken by over 100 million people as a native language, primarily in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in Europe and serves as an official language of the European Union. German has a rich literary and philosophical tradition, with figures like Goethe, Schiller, and Kant contributing significantly to global culture. The language is known for its complex grammar, including a case system and compound word formation, as well as its precision and expressive capacity. Standard German (Hochdeutsch) is used in education, media, and formal communication, while numerous regional dialects—such as Bavarian, Swabian, and Saxon—are spoken informally. German has influenced scientific, technical, and philosophical vocabulary worldwide and continues to be a key language in academia, engineering, and international business.
A placement test is a prerequisite for participation in German courses from level A2.
The results must be sent by e-mail to sprachkurse-LD[at]rptu.de at the same time as the course registration in KLIPS.
