Bachelor thesis by Mr. Stefan Frank – Stay in Namibia
From the beginning of April until the middle of May 2018, Mr. Stefan Frank was in Namibia for a 6-week stay abroad. During the first two weeks, Mr. Frank did his research on the structure of the Namibian road network and on the flood events of 2009 and 2010 at the Head Office of Roads Authority in Windhoek. The next four weeks, he spent at the José Eduardo dos Santos Campus at University of Namibia in Northern Namibia. There, Mr. Frank conducted field work on road damages caused by floods and did research on the management during and after a flood in Namibia. In organizing and planning his stay abroad, Mr. Frank was supported by the coordination center for the strategic partnership between Technische Universitaet Kaiserslautern and University of Namibia.
We would like to extend a special thank to the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Namibia for the support and accommodation at UNAM in Ongwediva. Furthermore, the stay of Mr. Frank was supported by the ALUMNI-association of the Faculty of Engineering of Technische Universitaet Kaiserslautern.
Bachelor thesis by Mr. Jan-Martin Schubert
On 22 November 2017, Mr. Jan-Martin Schubert defended successfully his bachelor thesis on the topic of “resilience of transport infrastructures to water-related hazards in arid areas, illustrated by the example of Namibia”.
The thesis was supervised by the Department of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management as well as by the Department of Mobility and Transport, both are part of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau. In the thesis, Mr. Schubert dealt with the concept of resilience, compared different systems and described the Namibian Road Network as well as the engineering practice for structural implementation. Furthermore, selected damage symptoms of crossing structures and transport infrastructures in Namibia were analysed and assessed.
Diploma thesis by Mr. Robert Witkowski
On 01 July 2015, Mr. Witkowski defended successfully his diploma thesis on "Use of regional construction materials and manufacturing techniques of construction of rainwater storage tanks".
In the north of Namibia, on the José Eduardo dos Santos campus of the UNAM in Ongwediva, a pilot plant for rainwater harvesting, water storage and irrigation of agricultural used areas was built. The structural implementation took place from August to October 2014. Within the framework of this project, a comprehensive documentation of the manufacturing process was carried out by Mr. Witkowski. The use of regional construction materials and manufacturing methods were considered in-depth.
