About Burrs

A burr can be defined as material formed as a result of plastic deformation from a cutting operation. In many machining operations, it cannot be avoided. Burrs can affect the functionality and the safe handling of the workpiece in the subsequent processing and have to be removed by a special deburring process. They may reduce the fit of components in assembly and burrs can be the source of particles which can for example cause the collapse of an engine when becoming free in an oil distribution system. The possibility to tolerate burrs, which are not functional edges, depends on their respective shape and size. High inspection costs are necessary to guarantee the workpiece quality.
