Burr Formation, Burr Minimization and Deburring

On June the 16th and 17th 2008 the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Production Systems at the RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau offered a short course on burrs. Participants from national and international companies and research facilities joined the course and demonstrated the importance of the topic.

The course was guided by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan C. Aurich, director of the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Production Systems, in collaboration with Prof. David Dornfeld, director of the Laboratory of Manufacturing and Sustainability at the University of California (Berkeley). The content of the course was based on almost two decades of research and experience on burr technology and deburring at the University of California.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan C. Aurich and Prof. David Dornfeld presented lectures concerning the fundamentals of burrs and showed strategies to minimize burrs. Further topics dealt with FEM analysis and burr formation simulation, burr measurement as well as deburring and its industrial application. Additionally there were laboratory demonstration sessions where machining techniques for burr minimization were demonstrated and deburring solutions illustrated. The participants often used the opportunity to bring burr formation and deburring problems to the class for discussion and problem solving. So they pointed out once again the actuality and relevance of the topic burr.

The course was an important event for the exchange of experiences throughout all participants and provided a successful opening event for the “International Conference on Burrs: Analysis, Control and Removal”, which is organized by the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Production Systems and will be held at the RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau on the 2nd and 3rd April 2009.
