Purchasing Computer Vision Protection Glasses (BAP Glasses)
at RPTU
For employees who work primarily at computer workstations, we offer occupational health screenings in accordance with the recommendations of the employers’ liability insurance association regarding “Work at Computer Workstations.” This screening may determine that special vision aids are necessary for your job.
In accordance with the Regulation on Occupational Health Examinations (ArbMedVV), Annex Part 4 (2) dated December 18, 2008, the employer must provide computer work glasses (BAP glasses) in this case. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate reimburses the costs for purchasing the glasses.
The procurement process, including reimbursement, has been revised and significantly simplified compared to the process previously used (as of February 2025).
All that is now required is a prescription for the BAP glasses from the company physician following an examination. The consultation with an ophthalmologist that was previously required is no longer necessary.

Step-by-Step Procedure:
- First, schedule a preventive care appointment with the company physician using the online appointment request form for the Landau or Kaiserslautern locations.
- Once the appointment has been scheduled, the examination will be conducted by the company physician. You must bring any eyeglasses you are currently using to the examination. This also applies to any existing BAP eyeglasses.
- If the eye exam determines that BAP glasses are necessary, the company physician will issue the appropriate prescription.
- With the prescription, you can go directly to an optician to have the appropriate BAP glasses made (please note the important information listed above regarding reimbursement). Please ensure that the invoice specifies the glasses as “computer workstation glasses.”
- You must initially cover the cost of the BAP glasses yourself. After submitting the reimbursement request to Department 6.4, the costs will be reimbursed and the corresponding amount will be paid into the bank account you specify.
- Please submit the reimbursement request along with the prescription from the company physician and the original invoice from the optician to Department 6.4. For reimbursement, we require a current eye examination from the company physician. This means that you need a new prescription from the company physician for each pair of BAP glasses you purchase.
Important Information About Computer Vision Safety Glasses (BAP)
The cost of the eyeglass frames can be reimbursed up to a maximum of 34 euros. Please ask your optician about appropriately affordable models. The additional cost for more expensive frames cannot be reimbursed.
Once the costs have been reimbursed, the glasses become the property of the employer and must be kept at the workplace. Exception: BAP glasses may, of course, also be used at a home office workspace.
- The price range for BAP glasses is between 150 and 400 €. For employees up to about 40 years of age, BAP glasses with progressive lenses are usually not necessary, and the price is typically under 200 €. For employees over 40 years of age, BAP glasses must have progressive lenses in many cases. This increases the cost of the glasses to up to 400 €. If, based on your optician’s recommendation, the glasses are expected to cost significantly more than 400 €, please contact Department 6.4 before placing the order. The principles of cost-effectiveness and economy as set forth in the State Budget Regulations (LHO) also apply to the procurement of BAP glasses.
