Ph.D. position in spintronics and spin dynamics (experiment)

In the working group Applied Spin Phenomena (Department of Physics, University of Kaiserslautern-Landau), a Ph.D. position is immediately available in the field of spintronics and spin dynamics.

Spintronic phenomena comprise the interaction of electronic charge currents with the spin degree of freedom. In particular, electric charge currents can be used to control and read out the orientation of magnetic moments in magnetically ordered materials such as ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Such electrical control of the spin degree of freedom is enabled by the torques exerted on the magnetization due to the spin-orbit interaction and can take place on sub-nanosecond timescales. These so-called spin-orbit torques are particularly appealing for novel information technology devices that utilize magnetic moments to compute or store information.

The Ph.D. project deals with the electrical control of spin dynamics in systems with more than one magnetic sublattice such as ferromagnetic heterostructures, antiferromagnets or ferrimagnets. Our experimental studies for this Ph.D. project will be carried out using state-of-the-art spin-dynamic spectroscopy by optical and microwave methods. These methods will be employed in combination with thin-film technology and lithography as well as magnetometry and magneto-transport.

We are looking for a motivated candidate who is eager to work in a productive scientific environment. A background in experimental solid state physics is an advantage.
