The acronym FAIR originates from a publication by Mark D. Wilkinson. In this publication, he describes the problem that research data should increasingly be available in machine-readable form and that the current curation of data simply cannot meet this requirement. In general, uniform standards would be conducive to the advancement of the entire body of knowledge.
