The Bachelor's degree program in Spatial Planning

Are you interested in the challenges facing our society, such as climate change, demographic change, migration and digitalization?

Would you like to get creative and design your own plans and develop solutions for sustainable and liveable cities and regions?

Would you like to work with different stakeholders such as citizens, administrations, environmental associations and businesses?

Then you should become a spatial planner!

What will your studies look like with us?
We focus on working in projects with small groups.
- We work in teams with various stakeholders from different social groups and with experts.
- Our degree program provides you with knowledge of urban planning, urban renewal, open space planning, regional development and spatial planning, as well as planning in the Global South.
- We place particular emphasis on environmental concerns and sustainability.
- Our new teaching and learning building enables creative work.
- We work with the latest methods of digitalization and visualization.
- Our research on current topics such as "Resilient transformation spaces" or "Ageing smart" flows directly into our teaching.

How is the course structured?
You usually study with us for six semesters.
You can always start your studies in the winter semester.
You have to collect a total of 180 ECTS to graduate.

You will learn the following content and skills during your studies:
- Fundamentals of urban planning, spatial planning and spatial development, architecture and open space, ecology, sociology, environmental law and public law as well as transportation planning and planning in the Global South.
- Skills in urban design, working methods of spatial planning, dealing with water and resources in the city, urban development and urban redevelopment, site development, urban land use planning and environmental planning.
- There are also many opportunities to take electives or do an internship.

What are your career prospects?
Spatial planners are wanted!!!
- The professional field offers you very good opportunities and many prospects.
- You can work in an administration (city administration, district administration, state ministry, federal ministries), a company (from small and medium-sized to global players), the media, with NGOs or in development cooperation.
- You can also set up your own planning office.

- What degree will you receive?
The degree is the B.Sc. in Spatial Planning.
- This degree also gives you the professional title of "Engineer".
- Our Master's degree programs build on the Bachelor's degree in Spatial Planning and offer you further qualification options.

Curriculum

The course of study can always begin in the winter semester. The following course of study is recommended:

1st semester:
- Fundamentals of urban planning history and urban analysis (6 LP)
- Basics of regional planning and spatial development (6 LP)
- Ecology (6 LP)
- Introduction to public law (6 LP)
- Working methods in spatial planning I (5 LP)

2nd semester:
- Fundamentals of urban planning and design (6 LP)
- Architecture and open space (6 LP)
- Sociology (5 LP)
- Urban planning and environmental law (7 LP)
- Working methods in spatial planning II (5 LP)
- Transportation Planning (6 LP), module runs over two semesters and is completed after the 3rd semester.

3rd semester:
- Urban design (6 LP)
- Concepts and instruments of spatial planning (5 LP)
- Economics (5 LP)
- Urban planning and building code law (6 LP)
- Dealing with water and resources in the city (6 LP)

4th semester:
- Urban development/urban redevelopment (6 LP)
- Location development (6 LP)
- urban land use planning (6 LP)
- Environmental planning (6 LP)
- Regional economics and methods of spatial research (6 LP)

5th semester:
- International aspects of spatial planning (6 LP)
- Informal planning (6 LP)
- Elective modules with a total of 18 LP (the credit points from the elective modules can be taken flexibly, e.g. language course, internship can also be taken earlier or during the lecture-free period)

6th semester:
- Study project (16 LP)
- Bachelor Thesis (12 LP)

Der Studiengang wird in deutscher Sprache angeboten. Nur im Wahlpflicht- und Studienprojektbereich (Internationale Planungssysteme) sind einzelne englischsprachige Lehrveranstaltungen wählbar.

The specialized internship offers the opportunity for practical and realistic work on concrete tasks and projects. The internship can be completed, for example, in private engineering and planning offices, at public institutions and authorities (e.g. city planning offices) or at chambers, associations or real estate companies.
