Our work is project-oriented and in the study projects you will learn to work on interdisciplinary spatial problems using scientific methods. The focus is always on developing possible solutions or strategies for sustainable development. Our research on current topics such as "Resilient Transformation Spaces", "Ageing smart" or "Linking Borderlands" flows directly into teaching and our study projects. Our new teaching and learning building enables creative work.
The Master's degree course in Urban and Regional Development has a modular structure and can be completed in four semesters, including the Master's thesis.
The modules are each limited to one semester and generally have a scope of 6 ECTS.
Your studies are divided into four sections:
1) In the compulsory modules, you will acquire knowledge of theories and models of urban development, regional and project management, guiding principles and instruments of urban development and urban regeneration as well as urban planning and spatial development law.
2) The focus of the course is on study projects, which enable you to deepen your knowledge and find solutions to specific planning tasks from research and practice. The project work is carried out in small groups and is supervised by interdisciplinary teams of lecturers from the department. You will start your studies with the interdisciplinary starter project Urban and Regional Development, in which you will get to know the course in all its facets. You will deepen your knowledge through the (inter)national research laboratory City and Region, which will give you an insight into current research work in the department. In the interdisciplinary Master's study project, you will work on practice-oriented and interdisciplinary solutions together with students from the Master's degree programs in Spatial Environmental Planning and/or Urban Planning.
3) In the compulsory elective area, you can choose courses from a wide range of subject areas, namely climate/environment/open space, mobility, economics, international planning, planning law, regional development and planning, urban, regional and environmental sociology, urban planning and urban development as well as processes/methods/key skills. In the open-topic elective area, you can also take the modules specialist excursion or competitions and workshops for spatial planners.
4) The final module is your spatial planning Master's thesis, in which you can explore a specific issue in depth. This prepares you for professional practice or a possible career in science, tailored to your areas of interest.
