Designing technology - from the idea to the machine
The mechanical engineering course is all about how ideas are turned into functioning systems, machines or products - from the first draft to the finished system. You will learn how technical products are developed, designed, made to work and operated.
To this end, you will receive a broad basic education in engineering science during your Bachelor's degree. Among other things, you will deal with mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, production engineering, electrical engineering, machine theory and design. This knowledge forms the basis for developing technical solutions and putting them into practice.
The Bachelor's degree qualifies you for direct career entry. However, the goal is a Master's degree - which is why you are guaranteed a place on a postgraduate course.
How the course works
At the beginning of your Bachelor's degree, you will attend lectures and exercises in mathematics, programming and technical basics - as a basis for the later specializations in mechanical engineering.
From the fifth semester onwards, you can set your own specializations: You choose one of seven so-called competence fields. You can choose from these:
- Product development
- Automotive engineering
- Materials science and materials engineering
- Production Engineering
- computational engineering
- Applied computer science
- Mechatronics and automation technology
This allows you to specialize according to your interests and at the same time lay the foundation for the appropriate Master's degree course (of the same name).
Compulsory elective modules also give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in a specific field of expertise or to think outside the box.
A 16-week internship is also part of the course: here you apply your knowledge in a company and gain further practical experience. You will complete your studies with your Bachelor's thesis - and gain your first insights into scientific work.
Before starting your studies:
To start your studies, you need a six-week basic internship - preferably in a technical company.
You don't necessarily have to have completed it before starting your studies, but you do need to provide evidence of it by the end of the 6th semester at the latest.
Our tip: If possible, do the internship before you start your studies. This will not only give you a more relaxed start, but will also give you some initial practical experience and insights - which will help you during your studies.
During your studies:
During the 16-week specialist internship, you will gain practical experience and get to know everyday working life in mechanical engineering or related fields directly.
