When designing the six-semester Bachelor's programme in Mathematics, the modern understanding of mathematics as a fundamental science and as a key technology was taken into account: the simulation of real processes on the computer is playing an increasingly important role - in the natural sciences as well as in technical professions.
Accordingly, the bachelor's degree programme in mathematics aims to provide both a broad fundamental education in pure and applied mathematics as well as fundamental knowledge in the conversion of real problems into mathematical formulas ("mathematical modelling"), in the development and implementation of algorithms (programming practicals) as well as in a non-mathematical subsidiary subject (minor).
In the third year, you also acquire in-depth (theoretical and practical) knowledge in a subarea of mathematics of your choice from the specialisations offered at the department:
• Algebra, Geometry and Computer Algebra
• Analysis and Stochastics
• Technomathematics (Modelling and Scientific Computing)
• Business Mathematics (Optimisation and Stochastics).

The education prepares you for a broad professional practice with heterogeneous requirements as well as for a subsequent Master's degree.

Curriculum

In the first year, the programme consists mainly of compulsory courses that lay the mathematical foundations in analysis and (linear) algebra. Building on this, in the second year you choose from a wide range of compulsory elective lectures, each of which introduces you to a sub-area of Pure or Applied (Practical) Mathematics. In the third year of study, you choose an area of specialisation in which you intensify your studies. In addition, you complete the specialised practical training (or internship) and write the Bachelor's thesis.

Parallel to the mathematical content, you will attend lectures in your chosen minor (subsidiary subject). If you want to continue your studies in the Master's programme in Industrial Mathematics (Technomathematics) after completing your Bachelor's degree, you must choose one of the following subsidiary subjects: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical & Process Engineering, Physics. In order to be admitted to the Master's programme in Business Mathematics, you need the subsidiary subject Economics & Business Sciences.

The examinations take place during the semester break and, apart from the examinations in the subsidiary subject, are exclusively oral. Written exams in mathematics are only required at the beginning of the programme (as prerequisite for the oral exams).

The programme offers many options and great flexibility. You will receive detailed information at the beginning of your studies and at regular information events organised by the department for the individual study phases. In addition, students have access to numerous counselling services (including the mentoring system).

In industry and business, graduates of mathematics degree programmes are valued for the fact that, due to their sound education, they are able to independently familiarise themselves with complex fields of work and that they can demonstrate general job-qualifying skills such as the ability to abstract, special analytical skills or creativity.

The demand for mathematicians has now become so great that they can choose between different job offers to start their careers. The reason is that more and more services are in demand: Management consultants, software houses, research departments of large companies, banks and insurance companies are sweeping the market of workers with the appropriate training.

Five Master's degree programmes are offered at RPTU in Kaiserslautern, which, depending on the choices made during the bachelor's degree programme (concerning the chosen subsidiary subject and area of specialisation), can be considered for further study:
• Master's programme in Mathematics
• Master's programme in Mathematics International (completely taught in English)
• Master's programme in Industrial Mathematics (Technomathematics)
• Master's programme in Business Mathematics
• Master's programme in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics (completely taught in English).
