Content

From the molecular processes in the cell to the interactions in ecosystems - biology as the science of life observes and explains structures and processes of living nature. The teacher training program in biology in Landau offers you an optimal combination of subject science and subject didactics for the teaching profession. The diverse biological phenomena are scientifically analyzed in practical laboratory exercises and field excursions. In doing so, we make use of various subject-specific cognitive methods of biology. In the didactic courses, biological content is examined from a school perspective. Current developments in subject didactic research and school practice are taken into account.

What opportunities does the biology teacher training program offer me?

The teacher training program in biology is offered at the Landau campus for the school types Gymnasium, Realschule plus, elementary school and special school and can be combined with any second subject. At the Landau campus, all courses are specially designed for teacher candidates and thus offer you the best possible preparation with a view to the teaching profession. The cooperation with schools and extracurricular places of learning in the surrounding area enables various subject didactic projects, which contribute to the interlocking of theory and practice in the course of studies. The Landau campus also offers you the opportunity to study interdisciplinary topics from the fields of environmental sciences and natural sciences in depth.

What prerequisites should I bring with me?

Enthusiasm for the content of biology and pleasure in communicating it to children and young people should be a matter of course for you. Basic knowledge of biology from high school is not a mandatory admission requirement, but it does make it easier to get started in the program. Likewise, knowledge of the other natural sciences (chemistry, physics) and mathematics is advantageous. Simultaneously with your entry into the subject of biology, you will be taught the relevant basics of chemistry in theory and practice.

Curriculum

How is the study program structured?

Depending on the type of school, the bachelor's program comprises 6-8 modules with the following contents and concludes with the bachelor's thesis:
- Fundamentals of Chemistry
- General biology
- Botany and zoology (morphology, anatomy, biodiversity, evolution, physiology)
- Human Biology
- Ecology
- Specialized working methods and cognitive methods of biology
- Didactics of biology

The scientific and didactic contents of the biology program are usually taught in a combination of different courses. While the theoretical foundations are laid in lectures, the seminars and exercises aim to deepen this acquired knowledge in an exemplary and practice-oriented manner. The ability to acquire knowledge independently and to prepare and present it in a way that is appropriate for the target group is also promoted. In microscopic exercises or experiments in the laboratory, you will learn important professional working methods and methods of knowledge. Excursions illustrate the contents of biology in nature or at extracurricular places of learning, such as environmental laboratories and natural history museums.
In addition, during the lecture-free period, compulsory internships at schools are to be completed, which will give you an insight into school practice.
