The use of natural resources is essential for human beings. In Western cultures and regions, their availability is often taken for granted. When resources become scarce, people often first recognize their value and benefits.

Current developments, such as climate change or increasing social injustice, challenge us to question the use of resources on a local and global scale and to reflect on the interaction of different systems.

In order to advance a socio-ecological transformation and to counteract current trends such as overconsumption or soil degradation due to climate change, it is important to understand essential elements of the individual systems and to take a close look at their interaction. - This degree program makes a significant contribution in this regard.

The bachelor's degree program Man and Environment: Psychology, Communication, Economics (B.Sc.) therefore imparts basic knowledge of environmental, natural and social sciences. Interdisciplinarity is already the basic principle of the Bachelor's program. During your studies you will learn that the sustainable use of natural resources is determined by a multitude of interlocking processes. Based on your interdisciplinary knowledge, you will be able to recognize and evaluate complex environmental problems and contribute to their solution.

Environmental sciences: What are the future approaches to environmental protection? What role do society, politics and the economy play in this?

Psychology: How does man act in his environment? How does he deal with its resources? What social processes determine responsible environmental action?

Communication: How are topics related to the environment communicated in the first place? How are "images" of climate change created? What role does the media play in shaping opinion on socio-ecological issues?

Economics: Which economic instruments are used to counteract climate change? Which legal frameworks have to be considered? How can an economy-oriented way of thinking be taken into account when dealing with environmental issues? How can companies promote responsible use of environmental resources?

Curriculum

The course has a standard period of study of 6 semesters and leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. You must earn a total of 180 ECTS for the degree, of which 12 ETCS are for the Bachelor's thesis.

- Fundamentals of communication science, social science and environmental economics
- Fundamentals of scientific theory and research methods from a social and natural science perspective

In order to gain practical experience, an internship of 6 weeks is required. This can be completed from the 3rd semester onwards during the course of studies or during the lecture-free period.

The bachelor's degree program provides a foundation for a variety of professional perspectives in the environmental field. These include, for example, professions with advisory functions in the environmental, communications or economic sectors. Also in planning and engineering offices, as well as in authorities, associations, foundations, NGOs and political organizations. Activities in public relations and communications consulting are also conceivable. Ultimately, the possibilities depend on your preferences and personal focus. The professional internship can also help you make contacts and get a taste of what it's like to work for a potential employer.

You can also follow up your Bachelor's degree with a Master's degree. In Landau, for example, "Environmental Sciences" or "Social and Communication Sciences" are available. In addition, the consecutive Master's degree course "Environmental Challanges and Human Responses" (ECHR) is currently being developed and is due to start in the winter semester 2024/25.
