The topic of environmental protection is a task for the future in which holistic approaches to solutions are required. In addition to scientific knowledge, solid knowledge in the fields of society, economics and politics is therefore indispensable.
The goal of the application-oriented study program is therefore to train interdisciplinary environmental scientists for the consideration, analysis and solution of complex environmental problems.
You will acquire basic knowledge in biology, geography, physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and environmental sciences. In addition, you will learn the basics of economics, ethics, environmental law and policy.

The program has a standard duration of 6 semesters and concludes with a Bachelor of Science degree. In the first semesters, you will initially acquire a broad basic knowledge in the individual natural science subjects and the supplementary subjects such as economics, ethics and environmental law. In the advanced semesters, there are mainly interdisciplinary courses that integrate and expand what you have learned across subjects. A four-week internship helps you to gain your first practical work experience and to get to know different job profiles. The program concludes with the bachelor's thesis.
Contents of the study program:
- Biology/Ecology
- Geography/Geoecology
- Mathematics/Statistics/Environmental informatics
- Environmental chemistry
- Environmental economics/environmental law
- Environmental physics
- Environmental policy/Environmental ethics
Studying environmental sciences requires a strong interest in the (natural) scientific consideration of environmentally relevant issues and the willingness to intensively study many different scientific fields. At least one natural science (preferably several) should have been taken as an advanced/examination course up to the Abitur. A professional internship before starting the course is not required. Details of admission are regulated by the examination regulations (see below).
Anyone with a German Abitur or a qualification recognized as equivalent can be admitted to the course. Admission places are offered to the best applicants depending on their Abitur or equivalent qualification grade.
General and current information on application and enrollment can be found at the bottom of this page (under " Application information").
There is also an online self-assessment (for your personal evaluation, not an admission test): https://passt.vcrp.de/studiengaenge/umweltwissenschaften/
After completing your Bachelor's degree, you can go on to study for a Master's degree. In Landau, for example, the degree courses "Environmental Sciences" or "Environmental Pollution Management (Ecotoxicology)" are possible. In addition, the co-curricular Master's degree course "Environmental Challenges and Human Responses" (ECHR) is currently being developed and is due to start in the winter semester 2024/25.

A four-week internship helps you to gain your first work experience and to get to know different professions.
Due to their wide-ranging competencies, graduates have access to a large number of professional fields with international employment opportunities:
- Research institutes
- industry, consulting companies
- Planning, engineering and consulting offices
- Authorities, public relations, environmental education (nature and environmental protection, agriculture, forestry and water management)
- Associations, foundations, NGOs, political organizations
In addition, the program prepares students for a master's degree, e.g. the consecutive master's degree programs in Environmental Sciences and Ecotoxicology in Landau.
