Climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental pollution - the problems of our time are complex and require people who have learnt to think and act in an interdisciplinary way. In the international Master in Environmental Sciences, you will explore environmental problems at different levels: from molecules to landscapes, on land and in water, from individuals to entire societies. During the degree, you can focus on different areas and thus shape your studies according to your personal interests. Sound theoretical teaching and hands-on practical courses in the field and lab prepare you for a successful start to your career.
The first semester introduces all students to the thematic diversity of the subject of Environmental Sciences. You then choose 2 of the following specializations:
• Applied Ecology
• Socio-Economics and Environmental Management
• Modelling
• Landscapes and Scales
• Environmental Analysis
• Aquatic Systems
• Soil Systems
• Chemicals in the Environment
• Environmental Engineering (Double Degree with Brno University of Technology)
The international degree course in Landau is free of tuition. It is attended by students from all over the world. Courses are almost exclusively taught in English.
Further information, such as details on specializations and the application process, can be found on our website: https://nuw.rptu.de/institute/ies/studium-lehre/msc-environmental-sciences
For any remaining questions on the program, you may contact the student advisory (see below).
Our Welcome Center offers personal support for all international students and accompanies prospective students on their way: https://rptu.de/international/master/prospective-students-rptu-in-landau
The Master's program is designed for 4 semesters of full-time study and comprises 120 ECTS. The program includes five compulsory modules that provide you with a sound knowledge of the most important disciplines and methods of the Environmental Sciences (28 ECTS). Building on this foundation, you decide on two of the 9 specializations mentioned above (48 ECTS) and select four modules for each. This is complemented by an additional module of your choice (6 ECTS). You can choose from around 40 different courses. A 6-week internship is also part of the program. The Master's thesis (30 ECTS) in the chosen field of interest deepens your knowledge and ability to work scientifically.
As we receive far more applications than there are places available, we select our students on the basis of their qualifications.
We require a Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences (or an equivalent course with a focus on natural sciences) with a final grade of at least good (e.g., 2.5 on a 5.0 point scale with 5.0 being the worst grade or 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale with 4.0 being the best grade)
In addition, we expect knowledge of biology, chemistry and mathematics/statistics acquired at a university-level.
The program is conducted in English, so a good active and passive knowledge of English is essential
A research and professional internship of at least six weeks at a research institute, with a state actor or in companies in Germany or abroad is part of the program. It offers the opportunity to gain practical work experience and make contacts for your Master's thesis and your professional career.
You have the opportunity to apply for a double degree and study the elective subject Environmental Engineering at the Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic) in the summer semester. This allows you to gain both a Master in Environmental Science from RPTU and a Master in Environmental Engineering from Brno University of Technology.
We also encourage our students to take advantage of the available exchange programs (e.g. ERASMUS) with cooperating universities to gain additional insights and experience abroad. We currently have ERASMUS partnerships with the following universities:
University of Aveiro (Portugal)
University of Jaén (Spain)
Sorbonne University (France)
Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic)
Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic)
University of Ostrava (Czech Republic)
