The German language belongs to the West Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family and is spoken by over 100 million people as their mother tongue, mainly in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and parts of Belgium, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in Europe and serves as the official language of the European Union.
