"City meets Campus": experience science, discover the campus, celebrate together

Hands-on science, exciting insights into current research and a campus full of life: With "City meets Campus", RPTU invites citizens from Kaiserslautern and the region to the university campus on April 30. The multifaceted day of action is part of the "750 Years of Kaiserslautern" anniversary program and offers numerous opportunities to discover, participate and enjoy from 1 pm.

From insights into robotics and 3D printing to a hands-on gardening workshop on biodiversity and the presentation of a support program for children with reading and spelling difficulties to shopping and wine tasting in the RPTU store and celebrating the summer opening of Unisport, the program is varied. To mark the 750th anniversary of Kaiserslautern as a city of science, "City meets Campus" brings science and the campus atmosphere to life for everyone.

1 to 4 pm:
Experience research - intelligent commercial vehicles and robotic systems

From 1 to 4 p.m., the Center for Commercial Vehicle Technology will be demonstrating what research at RPTU looks like in concrete terms on campus. The focus will be on intelligent commercial vehicles and robotic systems.

Among other things, the robotics laboratory of the computer science department will open its doors and present current research projects in the fields of mobile robotics, intelligent assistance systems and autonomous vehicles. Visitors will get to know an autonomous bus and an autonomous tractor. Also on display are a robot leg with artificial muscles, a humanoid robot for human-robot interaction and a robot dog. The team from the robotics laboratory will provide insights into fields of research such as sensor technology, artificial intelligence and modern control technology and show which developments are already being used in mobility, agriculture, industry and everyday life.

At the same time, the 3D printing laboratory of the Chair of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering is open to interested visitors. There, they can experience first-hand how modern 3D printing systems work, how complex components are created layer by layer and what role additive manufacturing plays in the commercial vehicle industry and science. Another highlight is the electrically powered robot ROVO, developed by Hawe Mattro for use in agriculture and unpaved terrain. The system serves as a research platform for automation, robotics and autonomous systems at the Center for Commercial Vehicle Technology. The current focus is on "logging" - researchers are investigating how the vehicle can support efficient and sustainable timber transportation in the forestry sector.

The Chair of Mechatronics in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering is also presenting a networked car equipped with sensors that serves as a test platform for automated driving and environmental perception.

Location: Building 48, Room 358 (robot presentations) and Building 42, Room 175 (3D printing lab and ROVO presentation)
Registration: not required

2 to 6 pm:
"Going Wild" - discovering and promoting biodiversity and implementing it in the garden

The biology department garden invites you to join in from 2 to 6 pm. Under the motto "Going Wild: Recognizing, preserving and promoting biodiversity in the city and garden", the garden team will show why biodiversity is so important - and how it can be practically implemented and protected in your own garden. Topics include beneficial insects, biodiversity-friendly structures and edible native wild plants. If you wish, you can take plants from the garden team's offspring for your own flower bed.

A tour with hands-on and knowledge stations makes biodiversity and ecosystem functions tangible. There is a craft and painting table for children. The biology student council will provide refreshments.

Location: outdoor area near building 16
Registration: not required

2 to 4 pm:
Lautarium 2.0 - support program for children with reading/spelling difficulties

The "Cognitive and Developmental Psychology" working group at RPTU will be demonstrating how targeted training for children with reading and spelling difficulties can be successful in a workshop from 2 to 4 pm. The researchers have developed the computer-based support program "Lautarium" for children with reading and spelling difficulties as part of the BMBF priority program "Developmental Disorders of School Skills". The program is based on the latest international research into the causes and treatment of reading and spelling difficulties and has proven effective in numerous studies. A new, web-based version of Lautarium will be released shortly. This can be used platform-independently at various locations with different end devices.

The working group will present the associated support concept as well as the content of the new version "Lautarium 2.0" and provide insights into the implementation of the training. There will also be an opportunity to try out the program for yourself on the notebooks provided.

The venue is Building 46, Room 225.
