Lecture series Making of Pfalz; lecture by Astrid Dröse: Female travel and the Palatinate

The lecture explores the travels of Palatine women as well as women's travels to the Palatinate - from the early modern period to the 20th century. The focus is on Sophie of the Palatinate, Sophie von La Roche, Queen Therese of Bavaria and the Landau photographer and painter Marie Strieffler, who followed in the footsteps of Palatine emigrants in the USA. How did these women see the Palatinate and what impressions did Palatine women convey from their travels? Which places did they visit, which scenic, cultural and political impressions did they record? And can specifically female perspectives on travel and the experience of foreignness in general and on the region in particular be identified over the centuries?
