Graduating at RPTU - Overview

On this page you can find an overview about the several ways of obtaining a PhD at the Kaiserslautern University of Technology. A first impression is given by the graphic below.

Earning a PhD/Doctorate in Germany

In Germany, the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is a rather high academic title. It is pursued after the successful completion of a Master’s degree (or an equivalent academic degree) at an internationally recognised university, and it is often considered to be a prerequisite for an academic career. The main focus of doctoral studies is placed on research, culminating in the writing of a PhD thesis. In Germany, there are basically two different ways to obtain a doctoral degree: Earning a PhD through individual research and through structured PhD-Programs, Graduate Schools or Research Centres.

One possibility that is typical for the German university system is to pursue a PhD by conducting individual research. For this purpose, the prospective doctoral candidate has to find a professor (Doktorvater/ Doktormutter) who is willing and able to act as a supervisor. The doctoral candidates are not normally paid for their work and no precise time frame for completing the thesis is given. It can take about 3 to 5 years to obtain the PhD.

In order to finance your PhD studies you have to be eligible or you have to apply for a program-related grant or other scholarships. If you are interested, please get in touch with the ISGS.

You also have the opportunity to work as a research assistant for a university professor of a chair or institute. Detailed information and help to get started on the path to a doctorate at the RPTU can be found here.
