Today, software and technology have become an indispensable part of our society. Generative language models like ChatGPT are used everywhere—not only to complete homework assignments or generate recipes, but also for travel planning, translation, and the development of large software systems. Companies utilize Artificial Intelligence for both quality assurance and to assist with HR decisions. And while TikTok and other social media platforms compete for our attention, their algorithms increasingly influence the information we perceive and how public debates are conducted. Anyone who wants to understand these developments needs more than just technical knowledge.
Socioinformatics is precisely what is needed here. Instead of looking at technology and people in isolation, it focuses on how both are interconnected and how they influence one another. During your studies, you will therefore engage with questions such as:
- What societal impacts can the introduction of new technologies bring about?
- How can phenomena like filter bubbles, doomscrolling, or AI slop be explained?
- What can be done to ensure that software not only functions technically, but also achieves its intended impact?
To date, the Socioinformatics degree program is unique within Germany. To enable a comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions between technology and humans, the program teaches:
- The necessary foundations of computer science, particularly software development,
- Methods from empirical social research and psychology,
- Economic and game-theoretical models from the economic sciences,
- a fundamental understanding of the relevant legal framework,
- A profound ethical standpoint developed through dialogue with philosophy,
- As well as competencies in systemic thinking and the modeling of complex problems. This is where socioinformatics expertise is forged - learning to conceptualize software engineering and societal integration as a unified whole.
Through numerous elective options, students can choose their own specialization within socioinformatics and develop an individual profile. For instance, over the course of your studies, you can choose to become a sought-after AI expert, a versatile software engineer, an informed science communicator in the field of digitalization, an analytical political advisor, or an expert business consultant.
Understanding the interactions between technology, people, and society requires a variety of perspectives. The Bachelor program is therefore structured into five mutually complementary sections. The Computer Science and Society sections form the foundation of the program, introducing students to the core concepts, methods, and mindsets of computer science as well as the economic and social sciences. In the Socioinformatics section, these fundamentals are brought together and applied to issues arising at the intersection of technology and society. The Electives/Complementary Studies section offers room for personal interests, allowing students to set individual priorities. Students conclude their studies with the Bachelors thesis, independently addressing a socioinformatics-related topic.
Computer Science
What is technically feasible, and what are the fundamental limits of digital systems? In the Computer Science section, students acquire the technical and mathematical foundations for software development. Central to this are the concepts of software engineering and a basic understanding of key areas of computer science, supplemented by selected theoretical foundations. A special focus is placed on the planning and development of large, distributed, and secure information systems, as well as on applications in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
Society
Societal decisions often operate within the tension between individual rights and the benefit to the community. Digital technologies increasingly change how people communicate, work, and do business, raising new social, economic, and legal questions. In the Society section, students learn about fundamental issues and methodologies in the economic and social sciences—particularly sociology, psychology, and economics, as well as ethics and law. The content is taught in introductory courses and supplemented by opportunities for individual specialization in specific subfields.
Socioinformatics
The Socioinformatics section serves as the bridge connecting computer science and society. Here, students learn to understand, analyze, and model complex systems in which technical components and human behavior are closely intertwined. A central element is the extensive programming project, where previously acquired knowledge is practically applied. In addition, seminars prepare students for academic research and lay the groundwork for the Bachelors thesis.
Supplement / Complementary Studies (Ergänzung)
The Complementary Studies section belongs to personal interests—this is where students can sharpen their own profile. They can choose to deepen their knowledge in computer science or the social sciences, but other application subjects or interdisciplinary topics are also possible. Additionally, language courses or student engagement can be credited to a limited extent.
Bachelor Thesis
The end of the program is marked by an independent academic achievement. In the Bachelor thesis, students independently tackle a professional research question—such as developing a software system or investigating a social science question with a connection to computer science. In both cases, the thesis should incorporate a socioinformatics perspective. The Bachelor thesis thus demonstrates the ability to address a complex issue in socioinformatics using scientific methods.

This degree program is well-suited for a semester abroad. For example, students have spent semesters abroad in Finland, Sweden, Spain, or New Zealand. However, a semester abroad is neither mandatory nor necessary for earning a bachelor’s degree.
The curriculum consists of software engineering combined with foundational knowledge in economics, ethics, law, sociology, and psychology. A degree in Socioinformatics therefore offers many opportunities for future career choices. While most graduates enter software development, graduates are also in high demand in politics, public administration, and business due to their interdisciplinary education and their ability to handle complex systems and problems well. For instance, instead of working primarily in software development, graduates can advise government agencies, audit the use of AI systems, or guide the introduction of new technologies within companies.
